Poised at the edge of the North Saskatchewan River valley and only minutes from downtown, the main U of A campus is conveniently located in the centre of the city. There is a major Light Rail Transit (subway) station right on the main campus, granting easy access to Edmonton's many attractions.

Students at U of A enjoy a variety of accommodations from furnished, traditional dormitory-style rooms to unfurnished apartments, townhouses, and houses.

Residences on the North (main) Campus that are open to first-year students include:

  • Lister Centre, which provides furnished dormitory rooms and a meal plan
  • HUB, where unfurnished apartments with up to four bedrooms surround the campus mall
  • International House, where Canadian and international students live in single, furnished dormitory rooms as part of a unique environment focused on global awareness

Residences located off of the North (main) Campus that are open to first-year students include:

  • Residence Saint-Jean, which is located at Campus Saint-Jean and offers single dormitory rooms with private washrooms to CSJ students
  • Augustana Residence, which is located on the Augustana campus in Camrose, Alberta and offers furnished dormitory rooms for up to two people

English language proficiency requirements

Completion of EAP 145 at the Canadian College will meet the English language proficiency required but students must apply separately with all supporting academic documents for entry into the University of Alberta undergraduate program. CCEL staff will assist with this process.

Work while studying

U of A students have great opportunities to gain work experience:

  • Working on campus: There are many services and businesses on campus that hire students, including restaurants, shops, and university offices.
  • Off-campus Work Program: International students who are in good academic standing and have completed six months of full-time studies are eligible to work up to 20 hours per week off-campus and up to 40 hours per week during holidays.
  • Cooperative Work Programs: You can have the chance to complete a work term as part of your degree and get work experience related to your field.
  • Academic Internships and Work Experience Programs: Various academic programs offer paid or unpaid work opportunities to give you practical and real-world experience related to your field.

The International Centre works to meet the needs and interests of international students and the global community. You are always welcome to drop in to relax, unwind, and socialize! From day one you will have access to a multitude of services and resources. The International Centre offers personal advice on immigration as well as financial and academic issues.
