Business English

The Business English course is designed to develop students' speaking, listening, writing, and reading skills in a business context. Canadian business topics and case studies are used to help students learn about communicating successfully in an English-speaking business environment.

Course Content

The course consists of two different four-week modules:

  • English for Presentation and Public Speaking (EPP)
  • English for the Workplace (EWP)
Upon successful completion of both modules, students can transfer credits to COMM140 - Communications at Canadian College.

English Level Requirements

Students are required to have an ENGL120 level in order to take Business English. It takes approximately 2 months to complete one level.

English for Presentation and Public Speaking (EPP)

This course is suitable for students who would like to learn strategies for and build confidence in speaking and presenting in front of small or large audiences. Even if you don’t necessarily need to do public speaking in your daily life, the course can help you to develop a variety of English skills.

You will learn how to:

  • organise your ideas for a professional presentation
  • create slides to support your presentation
  • deliver an effective and engaging presentation
  • use appropriate body language
  • ask and answer questions effectively

You will also improve:

  • fluency
  • pronunciation
  • listening
  • reading
  • writing

Example of presentation topics:

General topics:

  • introduction of your country & culture
  • your favourite travel destinations
  • your dream or goal
  • the advantages and disadvantages of social media

Business topics:

  • new business ideas
  • marketing strategies
  • sales pitches
  • work ethics

English for the Workplace (EWP)

This course is beneficial for students who want to communicate effectively and confidently at an English-speaking workplace. Learners will learn and practise using vocabulary and expressions useful in everyday work life and develop language skills and strategies for successful workplace communication.

The course covers topics including but not limited to:

  • communicating in the workplace
  • participating in and leading business meetings
  • writing business emails
  • participating in business phone conversations
  • making appointments
  • negotiating effectively
  • problem solving
